1. Reading is a skill and gets better with practice. Experts tell that children who spend as little as 30 minutes a day reading books, magazines and newspapers and more likely to become good readers. Encourage your child to spend some time reading every day. |
2. Get the library habit! Set aside library time every week on your family calendar of events and visit your local public library. While you're there, check a book out yourself. Remember: Actions speak louder than words. As your child's most important role model you are being watched. |
3. Make reading easy. If the TV is within reach, but books are stored on a high shelf, it is easy to predict how your children will spend their free time. Fill a "child-level" bookshelf with interesting books, and schedule TV time in advance. |
4. Reading aloud to your children every day. This is probably the most important thing you can do to encourage your child's success as a reader. Start with 10 minutes a day. |
5. During your read-aloud times at home, why not stop before the end of the story and ask your child to predict what she thinks may happen next? If you're reading a poem, encourage your child to guess what the next rhyming word might be. Ask your child how he might have changed the story. It's not just video games that are interactive! |
6. Child require a wide range of experiences if they are to understand what they read. Taking your child to the zoo, local farm, or a nearby park can provide wonderful opportunities for learning. A child who has seen and touched a calf will quickly learn the words cow, hoof and, of course, "moo". |
7. Did you ever take a flashlight to bed a sneak in a few extra pages before bedtime? Why not relax your child's bedtime rules once a week. Let your child know he can stay up as late as he wants as long as he's reading in bed. Choose a weekend night when your child can sleep late the next morning and plan a special bedtime snack. You'll encourage your child to read for pleasure and help him find out that reading is fun. |
8. Vary the location of their daily reading time. Try reading under a shady tree in a nearby park or spread a blanket on the floor and have an indoor reading picnic. |
9. Plan an "Oh D-E-A-R" time. That means "Drop Everything and Read." Schedule DEAR time in advance so that children see that reading time is just as important as basketball practice. Start with 30 minutes per week, and remember, everyone in the house must take part. So pop a big bowl of popcorn and grab that best-seller you have been promising yourself to read. |
10. Are you finding read-aloud time is hard squeeze into the daily routine? Why not try breakfast time? A "breakfast of champions" could include a read-aloud over breakfast. Bathtub time or during the morning commute can be alternatives to before-bedtime read-aloud. |
11. Start a family library so that your child's favorite books can be enjoyed again and again. Buy paperback books and cover them with clear, self-sticking plastic to help them to last. Look for used book stores and used book sales at your local library. Encourage your children to swap books with friends and neighbours. Establish a family tradition of giving books for holidays. |
12. Plan a "Book Swap" at your child's school. Admission is two or three used books. Give children a ticket for each book they turn in an allow them to exchange tickets for books other children have brought. This way, children can pass on the books they have brought and enjoy some new books at the same time. |
13. How can you tell whether a book is at your child's reading level? Use the "Rule of Thumb". Have your child read a page of the book aloud. Have her hold up one finger for each word she does not know. If she holds up 4 fingers and a thumb before the end of the page, the book is probably to hard for her to read alone. |
14. For a very early reader, you can turn your whole house into a reading lesson. Make masking tape labels for everything your child sees or uses: door, wall, sofa, bed, light switch. |
15. Limit the amount of TV your child watches. Give your children "TV Tickets" each good for 30 minutes of television time. When the tickets are gone, the set is turned off for the week. If possible, allow children to redeem unused tickets for money to buy books. |
16. Bake or cook together. Reading and preparing a recipe together is an excellent way to give your child practice in reading and following directions. Choose a simple recipe-one your child enjoys. Have him read the directions out loud, step by step. |
17. Try a scavenger hunt as a fun reading activity. Write clues that send your child from one part of the house to another. |
18. Try a scavenger hunt through the newspaper by giving your child a list of things to find, e.g., a picture of a famous athlete, the temperature in your town yesterday, the time her favorite TV program begins, the title of a movie at a local theatre, a favorite cartoon. Give your child the list, scissors, glue and your newspaper. |
19. When your child asks a question, and you don't know the answer, help him look it up. A trip to your local library will help your child find the answer to his question and to learn how to find answers to many questions in the future. |
20. Encourage your child to write a letter to their favorite author. |
